The political world was sent into a state of profound shock and disbelief on September 10, 2025. During a campus event at Utah Valley University, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot. The sudden and devastating assassination of a prominent political figure has since launched a nationwide manhunt, with federal agents and local authorities working around the clock to track down the individual responsible.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, investigators moved swiftly to secure the scene. According to law enforcement data, the fatal shot appears to have originated from a nearby rooftop. Cameras in the area reportedly captured footage of a person climbing onto the building just before the shooting and then quickly running down the stairs. Police were also able to locate a bolt-action rifle hidden not far from the scene, which has been sent for ballistics testing. With the murder being labeled an assassination by many political leaders, including President Donald Trump, the hunt for the killer has become a national priority.
The Official Hunt and a Digital Firestorm
In their most direct appeal to the public, the FBI released two images of a person of interest via an official social media post, offering a substantial reward of up to $100,000 for any information that could lead to an identification. While federal agents were following methodical, evidence-based leads, the release of the photos ignited a digital firestorm. A legion of amateur online investigators quickly descended upon the post, unearthing a wide array of claims and conspiracy theories that have since dominated social media platforms.
The relentless online sleuthing has gone beyond simple speculation, with users connecting disparate pieces of information to build elaborate, albeit unverified, theories about the assassination. These self-appointed detectives have shared everything from alleged flight data to troubling social media posts, all in an effort to be the first to crack the case. The chaotic nature of this online detective work has been met with caution from authorities, who have urged the public to wait for factual, verified information and not to spread unconfirmed rumors that could hinder the investigation.
Unverified Theories and Online Accusations
Among the most widely discussed theories is one presented by conservative commentator Candace Owens. She posted a claim on X alleging that a private jet departed from Provo Airport just an hour after the shooting, but then went "off the grid" about 30 minutes into its flight. While she acknowledged counter-arguments that the jet may have simply lost signal over remote terrain, she urged her followers to "chase down every lead," adding that a private jet pilot had suggested the transponder may have been intentionally shut down.
Another troubling clue that quickly gained traction came from a resurfaced screenshot of an X post by a Utah resident. A user had made a foreboding comment on their own post, hinting that "something big" would happen during Kirk’s visit. This cryptic remark drew immediate scrutiny. Some online users claimed that the hands of the suspect in the FBI's photo appeared to resemble those of the person who made the post. The account later had its username changed, but not before the initial suspicions had already spread far and wide.
Perhaps the most chilling theory, however, connects the killing to a musician and a song uploaded online more than a month before the assassination. According to some online users, a Soundcloud artist identified as Skye Valadez, reportedly based in Salt Lake City, had uploaded a track that appeared to predict Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The song, which listeners have described as "distorted noise with dark, aggressive lyrics," was allegedly titled “**Charlie Kirk** Dead at 31.” While the song has since been removed from the platform, determined users claim it can still be located through manual Google searches, and its eerie coincidence has only intensified speculation that the murder may have been premeditated.
The Unraveling of a Digital Identity
The online speculation has not been confined to separate theories; amateur sleuths have begun to connect the dots between them. Some online investigators have drawn connections between the Soundcloud artist Skye and the X user Omar, whose earlier comment hinted at the shooting. Based on reports of their similar surnames, online investigators have suggested the two individuals could be the same person, as their digital footprints appear to overlap.
Speculation has also swirled around potential motives. With Kirk’s outspoken positions on conservative causes, some users have claimed the suspect could have been angered by his views on LGBTQ+ issues. They have pointed to Skye/Omar’s use of she/her pronouns and self-presentation as evidence of a political grievance, suggesting a politically motivated assassination. This line of inquiry has opened up a new and highly sensitive area of speculation, with some blaming the musician and others warning the public not to spread unconfirmed accusations.
A Call for Caution Amid the Chaos
It is crucial to note that despite the flurry of theories and online detective work, Charlie Kirk’s killer remains at large. Law enforcement officials have not publicly named any suspects, and no arrests have been made. Whether the song is authentic or if Valadez actually posted it remains unknown. For now, the FBI’s reward stands as investigators painstakingly sift through tips and digital leads in the hope of bringing the shooter to justice.
The articles themselves underscore the importance of distinguishing between online speculation and verified fact. They lament that a tragedy has become a breeding ground for rumors and warn the public to be responsible in what they share. As authorities and officials work diligently to follow leads and gather evidence, they continue to urge the public not to spread false information, but rather to wait for factual, verified information first. It is an unfortunate reality that even as the country grieves, the search for the truth is complicated by the very platforms designed to connect us.
